Using the Power of Internal Mobility for Good

Updated: Mar 2, 2023

Businesses are grappling with an extraordinary skills shortage – across a range of functional areas and levels. This is due to numerous factors – some beyond our control eg. Exodus of expat talent during COVID-19. The impact that these skill / talent gaps are causing is often significant:

- Employees are being asked to take on additional responsibilities (without adequate compensation or recognition) leading to frustration, disengagement and burnout

- Employees are being promoted / redeployed without adequate training or development resulting in poor performance, disengagement… and burnout!

At best, this is an ineffective attempt at plugging holes – short term gain but undoubtedly resulting in long term pain. At its worst, it is leading to significant issues in businesses with performance and engagement issues impacting the bottom line and significantly hurting the career path and mental and physical wellbeing of employees.

When deployed correctly, internal mobility can be a significant asset to businesses resulting in them:

- Filling challenging positions / skill gaps

- Boosting engagement

- Driving performance results

All of this has a significantly positive impact on the bottom line but it requires a proactive strategy rather than a reactionary approach.

Businesses that approach internal mobility with a focus on...

1. Identifying key business drivers

2. Understanding key roles / skills needed by the business to achieve objectives

3. Identifying high potential talent

4. Supporting them with the delivery of appropriate training and development

..will undoubtedly find themselves ahead of the game in the talent market today and in the future.
